Maruti e-Vitara Prices Confirmed, Toyota Ebella Launch Due March 15: Which Japanese Electric SUV Wins Under ₹20 Lakh?

India’s mid-size electric SUV segment faces a defining moment this month as the Maruti Suzuki e-Vitara enters retail with a fully disclosed price list and its mechanical twin, the Toyota Urban Cruiser Ebella, prepares to officially launch on March 15, 2026. The two vehicles — built on the same Heartect-e platform, manufactured at the same Gujarat facility, and fitted with identical battery packs — are nonetheless being positioned at measurably different price points, with consequences that directly answer the question trending among Indian car buyers this week: which offers better range for under ₹20 lakh?

What Is Actually Confirmed: The Maruti Pricing

Maruti Suzuki revealed the full variant-wise pricing of the e-Vitara in February 2026, with the battery-rental scheme bringing the entry point to ₹10.99 lakh for the base Delta 49 kWh variant, charged at ₹3.99 per km for battery usage. The mid-spec Zeta and top-spec Alpha variants are priced at ₹11.99 lakh and ₹14.29 lakh respectively under the same Battery-as-a-Service scheme, with an increased battery subscription fee of ₹4.39 per km for the 61 kWh battery. For buyers opting for outright purchase without a battery subscription, the three variants — Delta, Zeta, and Alpha — are priced at ₹15.99 lakh, ₹17.49 lakh, and ₹19.79 lakh respectively, ex-showroom. The Alpha Dual Tone version costs ₹20.01 lakh. The base Delta trim carries the 49 kWh battery, offering 440 km of ARAI-claimed range, while the Zeta and Alpha come with the 61 kWh pack, rated at 543 km. CNBC

The range arithmetic under the ₹20 lakh constraint therefore resolves clearly in Maruti’s favour. At ₹19.79 lakh, the e-Vitara Alpha delivers the top-spec 61 kWh battery with 543 km of claimed range within the budget threshold. The Alpha Dual Tone at ₹20.01 lakh crosses it by ₹1,000.

Toyota’s Pricing: Not Yet Official

The Toyota Urban Cruiser Ebella is confirmed for a launch event on or around March 15, 2026, with bookings open at ₹25,000. However, as of March 9, Toyota has not released official pricing. Autocar India estimated the Urban Cruiser Ebella’s starting price at around ₹20 lakh ex-showroom, with the top-spec variant expected to reach ₹24.42 lakh. DIGITIMES CarWale’s pre-launch estimate places the range at ₹16 lakh to ₹19.50 lakh, reflecting the dispersion in analyst projections ahead of official confirmation. This divergence in estimates — spanning nearly ₹4 lakh at the base — underscores that any direct price comparison between the two vehicles must be treated with caution until Toyota’s official announcement on March 15. What follows is therefore an evaluation based on confirmed Maruti pricing and Toyota’s disclosed specifications, with pricing estimates clearly labelled as such.

The Platform They Share, and Where They Differ

The Urban Cruiser Ebella shares the same body shell as the e-Vitara and carries identical battery options — 49 kWh and 61 kWh — with the same dual-screen dashboard layout. The distinguishing elements are primarily visual: the Ebella features sleek wraparound headlamps with segmented LED DRLs, a different front bumper, and L-shaped taillights connected by a light bar. Inside, a JBL audio system is confirmed, along with Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, a 360-degree camera, and Level 2 ADAS.

The Ebella is 4,285mm long, wider than the Creta Electric but with a ground clearance of 184mm — the lowest among its key rivals. The 2,700mm wheelbase is among the longest in the segment. Toyota has confirmed only a front-wheel-drive configuration for the Indian market, with the dual-motor AWD variant available overseas not currently planned for India.

Toyota’s official specification sheet confirms a 543 km ARAI-certified range for the 61 kWh variant, with the caveat that actual range may vary based on driving pattern and road conditions. DC fast charging using a 70 kW CCS2 charger brings the 61 kWh battery from 10 to 80 per cent in approximately 45 minutes, while an 11 kW AC wallbox completes a full charge in roughly 5.5 hours.

On paper, the powertrain performance is identical across both vehicles. The 49 kWh motor produces 144 hp and 189 Nm, while the 61 kWh variant generates 174 hp at the same torque figure.

Ownership Structure: Where the Offers Begin to Diverge

Maruti is offering a complimentary 7.4 kW AC home charger for the e-Vitara, along with free charging until 1,000 kWh or one year — whichever comes first — at Maruti Suzuki dealerships for customers who purchase before March 31, 2026. The battery warranty stands at 8 years or 1.6 lakh km, whichever arrives first. Two buyback schemes are available: a 3-year, 45,000 km plan with a 60 per cent buyback value, or a 4-year, 60,000 km plan at 50 per cent.

Toyota is offering an 8-year battery warranty on the Ebella, along with a BaaS option and a 60 per cent assured buyback, mirroring Maruti’s core ownership structure. The JBL sound system is confirmed as a feature differentiator in the Toyota’s cabin. Atlasinstitute Specific Toyota ownership benefits — including any complimentary charging arrangements — have not been formally announced as of the date of this report.

The Verdict Within the Budget Constraint

For buyers operating with a strict ₹20 lakh ceiling for outright purchase, the answer is currently unambiguous: the Maruti e-Vitara Alpha at ₹19.79 lakh delivers the maximum available ARAI-claimed range of 543 km from the 61 kWh battery, within budget, with a fully confirmed price list and available deliveries now.

Whether the Toyota Ebella will undercut or match this offer depends entirely on where Toyota prices its 61 kWh variants when it formally launches on March 15. Pre-launch estimates suggest Toyota’s equivalent 61 kWh variant could be priced at around ₹21 lakh to ₹24 lakh, which would place it above Maruti’s confirmed Alpha pricing. If those estimates hold, Toyota’s proposition for the ₹20 lakh buyer reduces to the 49 kWh version — 440 km of range, at a price point that remains to be confirmed.

What is not in question is the mechanical foundation both vehicles rest on. The range figures are identical because the batteries are the same. The ARAI-certified 543 km number belongs equally to the e-Vitara Alpha and to the Ebella E2 or E3 — the question is simply which brand gets you there within ₹20 lakh. Until March 15, only one of them has answered that question.

All Maruti Suzuki e-Vitara pricing figures are sourced from the official dealer-confirmed price list reported by Autocar India and Team-BHP. Toyota Urban Cruiser Ebella pricing represents pre-launch analyst estimates from Autocar India and CarWale, and has not been officially confirmed by Toyota India as of March 9, 2026. All range figures are ARAI-certified claims; real-world range will vary. This article will require updating following Toyota’s official pricing announcement on or around March 15, 2026.
