Few questions in 2026 educational policy generate more institutional disagreement than where to draw the line on AI use in student coursework. The debate has produced a spectrum of responses from educational institutions: outright bans, honor code updates treating AI use as plagiarism, full integration into curriculum, and careful middle-ground policies that distinguish between AI as a learning tool and AI as a work-completion substitute. The evidence base for which approach produces better learning outcomes is still developing, but several findings from 2025 research are sufficiently robust to inform a clearer position.

The fundamental pedagogical concern about AI tools like ChatGPT in homework is that they can complete the task — writing an essay, solving a problem, summarizing a text — without the student engaging in the cognitive process the task was designed to build. If the purpose of a writing assignment is to develop a student’s ability to construct an argument, structure evidence, and communicate clearly, an AI-written essay produces the output without the learning. The assignment is completed; the skill is not developed.

This concern is empirically well-grounded. A 2025 study published in Nature Human Behaviour found that students who used AI to complete writing assignments showed lower retention of course material and poorer performance on unassisted assessments compared to students who completed the same assignments without AI assistance. The effect was most pronounced for students with lower prior knowledge — precisely the students for whom the cognitive exercise of the assignment was most important. The convenience of AI-assisted completion disproportionately harmed the students who could least afford the shortcut.

The counterargument — that AI tools are a legitimate part of the modern professional toolkit and students should learn to use them — is also valid, but it points toward a different kind of AI integration than homework completion. Learning to use AI effectively requires understanding its limitations, verifying its outputs, and applying critical judgment to what it produces. These skills can be taught explicitly through assignments designed around AI use — asking students to critique an AI-generated draft, fact-check an AI-summarized article, or identify where an AI solution to a problem fails. This is fundamentally different from using AI to generate a homework submission.

Several major universities have updated their academic integrity policies to reflect this distinction. MIT’s 2025 policy, for example, distinguishes between AI as a research tool — permitted and encouraged — and AI as a drafting tool for assessed work — prohibited unless the assignment explicitly specifies otherwise. The UK’s Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education has published guidance recommending that assessment design evolve to emphasize tasks that require demonstrated real-time ability, such as oral examinations, in-class essays, and project presentations.

For India’s educational system, the challenge is structural as well as pedagogical. The JEE and NEET examination systems — which determine access to India’s most competitive engineering and medical programs — remain closed-book, paper-based assessments that cannot be assisted by AI. The skills most valued by these gatekeeping examinations are precisely those developed by the unassisted cognitive work that AI tools shortcut. A student who completes school assignments with AI assistance but faces a pen-and-paper competitive examination is not well served by that pattern.

The defensible position, supported by the available evidence, is that AI tools should be explicitly integrated into curriculum as subjects of study — teaching students what they are, how they work, where they fail, and how to use them critically — while unassisted written and analytical assessment remains the standard for measuring individual student learning. Banning AI tools entirely is neither enforceable nor realistic preparation for professional life. Permitting unrestricted AI use in assessed work undermines the purpose of the assessment. The middle path — designed integration with explicit skill-building goals — requires more curriculum development than either extreme but is the approach most consistent with what the learning science actually shows.
